Your Treatment Options + State Drug Abuse Facts

Introduction

Addiction to drugs or alcohol can be devastating, and getting professional help is critical for overcoming your substance abuse problem. A number of different drug treatment programs exist with varying approaches to help those who abuse drugs or alcohol conquer the psychological and physical aspects of their addiction. Substance abuse is a widespread problem throughout New York, with the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services estimating that about 12 percent of all New Yorkers abuse drugs and alcohol each year. If you or a loved one are facing addiction, understanding your treatment options is the first step on the road to recovery.

Type & Length of Care

Long-Term Treatment Programs (90-Day)

A long-term treatment program seeks to provide round-the-clock care for those battling addiction, typically in a non-hospital community setting. Often following a period of detoxification, the patient will live at the facility and receive addiction treatment in a supportive group setting. Long-term treatment programs place emphasis on group counseling and “resocialization” in order to help the patient overcome the psychological aspects of their addiction and develop personal accountability.

Short-Term Treatment Programs (28 / 30 Day)

As compared to long-term treatment programs, short-term residential programs provide an intensive inpatient treatment based around a modification of the 12-step approach. Upon completion of the course of treatment, these short-term facilities often transition patients into longer-term outpatient therapy in order to reduce the chances of relapse outside of the residential setting.

Outpatient / Inpatient

A variety of outpatient programs exist, and these outpatient treatment options are primarily distinguished by the weekly hours spent in treatment. Partial hospitalization programs are the most rigorous, with up to 20 hours spent in individual and group counseling weekly; in intensive outpatient programs, patients spend between nine and 12 hours in weekly counseling sessions. Outpatient treatment is often utilized following an inpatient treatment program or for those who need to continue work or school while receiving treatment.

Residential Treatment Services

Detox

Drug and alcohol addition typically entails physical dependence on the abused substance, and detoxification can be a helpful first step in any drug treatment program. Abruptly stopping drug use can trigger acutely painful and often dangerous physiological symptoms; indeed, drug withdrawal can even be fatal for substances ranging from alcohol to heroin. Detoxification programs often utilize physician-administered medications to help ease the withdrawal symptoms in what is known as “medically managed withdrawal.” Because a detox program does not address the underlying issues that led to addiction, detoxification generally precedes a more comprehensive drug addiction treatment program.

Sober-living house

After completing an inpatient drug treatment program, many addicts in recovery are not fully ready to return to their lives for a number of reasons. They may lack a support system to help them in recovery, their former environment may present challenges to their newfound sobriety or they may simply need additional ongoing support to resist temptation. For such individuals, a temporary stay in a sober-living house can help. These facilities do not provide treatment directly, but do typically have rules such as curfews and strict zero tolerance policies to help keep addicts on the path to recovery.

Dual diagnosis

Mental illness and substance abuse often accompany one another, and dual diagnosis programs exist to help treat mental illness and drug addiction simultaneously. Often through an inpatient rehabilitation center, those with a dual diagnosis can receive therapy and medication support to improve their mental health as they receive substance abuse treatment to end their addiction.

Commonly Abused & Treated Drugs

Prescription opioid and heroin addiction have both seen a surge in New York over the past decade, with overdose deaths from both reaching new highs in recent years. Research conducted by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy indicated that heroin, marijuana and cocaine are responsible for the majority of primary drug treatment admissions in New York.

Conclusion

Professional help can save you or your loved one from the ravages of an untreated substance abuse problem, and the best time to start treatment is today. Many who face drug or alcohol addiction are able to achieve more effective results from treatment if they attend an addiction treatment program away from home, removing the temptation offered by peers and familiar surroundings to fall back into old routines.
